Most hair loss is inherited. It’s caused by a gene you received from your mother that makes your hair follicles die when too much DHT—a metabolite of testosterone—accumulates. When the follicle dies, the hair falls out, and that’s that.
The only way to prevent hair loss that is caused by genetics is to go back in time and choose different ancestors. But then you wouldn’t be you, would you?
So, in most cases there is no way to prevent hair loss. However, sometimes hair loss is caused by a correctable problem. In those instances, treating the underlying problem will not only keep you from losing more hair, but will also allow what you already lost to grow back.
Hormonal Imbalances
Both male and female sex hormones have an effect on hair growth, and when they get out of balance you can lose hair. This happens commonly in women whenever they have reproductive changes, such as menarche, pregnancy, childbirth or menopause. With normal changes like that, the problem corrects itself when hormone levels stabilize. Sometimes, though, your hormones need to be regulated with medications.
Another hormone imbalance that causes hair loss is hypothyroidism. Having your thyroid checked and taking medication if you need it will prevent hair loss from low thyroid hormones.
Medications
Some medications may cause hair loss. Blood thinners, gout medications, birth control pills and antidepressants are among the culprits. If you start noticing excessive hair loss a few months after starting a new medication, talk to your doctor about it. She may change the medication to prevent hair loss from continuing.
Fungal Infections
Adults aren’t often bothered by fungal infections of the scalp, but it can cause temporary hair loss in infants and children. Treating scalp infections when they first appear will prevent hair loss of this kind.
Hair Care
Tightly braiding your hair, as in cornrows, can cause hair loss because there is constant traction on the hair follicle. If the follicle is damaged, you will lose hair. This is temporary unless the problem goes on long enough for the hair follicles to be scarred. If the follicles are scarred, they won’t grow new hair. You can prevent this kind of hair loss by either keeping the braids loose or by not leaving them in for long periods of time.
Permanents and hair dye may cause inflammation or damage to hair follicles, too. To prevent hair loss from hair care products, always take care to follow all package directions completely, or have a qualified hair care professional put them in for you.
You can’t prevent hair loss that’s genetic. You can prevent hair loss that has some underlying cause, though, by finding out what the cause is and correcting it. Most often, that will involve a trip to the doctor’s office so that she can determine if you have a problem that’s causing your hair to fall out. Even if you can’t prevent hair loss, you can find treatments and remedies that will help your hair grow back and look thicker. Most hair loss can’t be prevented, but it can be managed.
